Goan Prawn Curry
Goan prawn curry is a flavorful and aromatic dish originating from the coastal state of Goa, India. This curry is known for its rich, tangy, and spicy flavor profile, which is achieved through a harmonious blend of local spices and coconut.
The dish features succulent prawns cooked in a sauce made from freshly grated coconut, tamarind, and a variety of spices such as coriander, cumin, and turmeric. The curry is further enhanced with the addition of onions, garlic, ginger, and green chilies, which are sautéed to create a fragrant base.
Goan curry has a creamy texture and a great balancing of the heat of the spices. Tamarind paste or pulp is incorporated to provide a tangy kick that complements the sweetness of the coconut and the earthiness of the spices.
Recipe Ingredients
Spice paste
1 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
2 inches peeled ginger
6-8 cloves of peeled garlic
12 black peppercorns
4 tbsp coriander seeds
2 tbsp cumin seeds
7-8 dry seedless red chillies (soaked in water for 20 minutes)
2 tbsp wet seedless tamarind
1 red onion
2 tbsp turmeric powder
Goan Sauce
4 Kokum
8 Sichuan/Szechwan peppercorns
2 mild green chillies (seedless)
400g peeled and cleaned larger king prawns/fish of your choice
Warm water as required or use coconut milk
Salt as required

    I make mines similarly but under the grill as I dont have a tandoor sadly. For something different , ditch the onions, slice in half a tomato. Add S+P and sprinkle Oregano on it and grill at the same time as the Chicken. Game Changer!

    Hello, I have just cooked this recipe for our tea this evening, I am a cookie and adore Asian food. I have to say that this recipe is the most authentic madras I have ever cooked, no pre-cooked BIR gravy, just wholesome fresh ingredients! Incredible that no water is added! Just beautiful!     Could you check the ingredient listing please? I made this and the sauce ended up very thick. I'd try again but think this might say tablespoon but mean teaspoon. Thanks.

      You will need to adjust the consistency with warm water. Nuts and poppy seeds thicken up when cooking this kind of sauce. All ingredients are measured carefully. Also remember adjust flame settings at different stages of the cook off. I am confident that will a little more practise you can get better results ❤

    I do not like paneer, but will try this anyway, since everything I have tried out from was spectacular. The remark about "edible mustard oil" was funny. When I arrived here in the US, I was confused because on every bottle of mustard oil it said "for external use only". Luckily, my confusing only lasted a few seconds: doesn't apply to me because Indian I always cook outside because of the open kitchen I have here
